The spirals of many mollusc shells follow the Fibonacci series ie: 1+1=2, 1+2=3, 2+3=5, 3+5=8, 8+5=13 etc. This is also part of the Golden Section and can be found in many areas of the natural world including on petals. Look it up on the web, it is fascinating. Architects use the same formula for spiral staircases!
